The Margaret Tietz Center has joined the Charity Through Sports initiative by sponsoring  a local Yeshiva basketball team. In an effort to combine charity and basketball, Charity Through Sports allows teams to enter a competitive basketball league while giving community organizations the chance to benefit as well.  Aside from covering the costs of running the league, any entrance fees by the players and/or sponsors go to charity.  Additionally, prize money is sponsored for the champions which goes, not to the players themselves, but to the charity of their choice. Tietz, beloved past President of the Margaret Tietz Center Board of Directors as well as President for many years of the Margaret Tietz Center Foundation, now known as the New York Foundation for Elder Care. A very special dedication and memorial service was held for Gerald H. Hart, former Executive Director of the Margaret Tietz Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on October 27th, 2011 at the Tietz Center. In attendance were legislators, organization administrators, board members, residents, colleagues, and staff. Gerald’s family joined us for this moving tribute to their son. As part of Gerald’s legacy at the Tietz Center and for the purpose of perpetuating his support of students with limited opportunities, a Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established in his name for special education students from the Queens Transitional Center, part of the Department of Education. This scholarship fund will give students opportunities to develop a career track and support them in seeking future employment.
