Margaret Tietz Center in conjunction with Samuel Field Y and the Queensboro Council for Social Welfare is pleased to present "Dementia: Research, Treatment and Caregiver Support" – a vital symposium for providers and caregivers of individuals dealing with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. This event will take place on Wednesday, January 22nd at Margaret Tietz Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at 164-11 Chapin Parkway, Jamaica Hills, NY. Doors open at 9:30 am with Registration and Breakfast. Keynote Speakers are scheduled from 10 am to 11:30.
With a growing population of seniors dealing with the onset of dementia and all the ensuing challenges, it is crucial for caregivers to be as educated as possible in order to provide their loved ones with the support and care they desperately need. An estimated 5.2 million Americans of all ages have Alzheimer's disease, and 80% of their care is provided by unpaid caregivers, usually family members. The emotional and physical toll of caregiving is very high, and caregivers need to learn what resources are available to them so that they receive the necessary stress relief and time out.
The symposium will feature a distinguished roster of presenters including Jed A. Levine, MA – Executive Vice President and Director of Programs & Services of the Alzheimer’s Association, NYC Chapter; Jane C. Bardavid, LCSW – Director of the Community Advisory Program for Elderly (CAPE) at Samuel Field YM & YWHA; and Joan Serrano Laufer, LMSW –Executive Director of the Queensboro Council on Social Welfare.
If you are interested in attending please RSVP to Linda Spiegel at 718-298-7838. For your convenience, valet parking will be available.

On Nov. 6, 2013, residents from throughout Queens and the Five Towns flocked to Margaret Tietz Nursing and Rehabilitation Center to hear Congresswoman Grace Meng share her impressions from her recent congressional trip to Israel. The Congresswoman serves New York's 6th District, one of the most diverse in the U.S. In attendance were many prominent Rabbis, Board Members, Community leaders and partners. Margaret Tietz Executive Director Yoel Lichstein opened the program with a warm welcome and was followed by Rabbi Fabian Schonfeld, Rabbi Emeritus of Young Israel Kew Gardens Hill. Rabbi Schonfeld shared the history of the Tietz Department Store in Berlin and reflected on the significance of the distinguished Tietz name, the recent marking of Kristallnacht, and our victory over the Nazis. Congresswoman Grace Meng was then introduced by Michael S. Fassler, President and CEO of CenterLight Health System. The Congresswoman mesmerized the crowd with her vivid personal reflections and accounts of visiting Yad V’shem, meeting the Israeli Prime Minister, and meeting President Shimon Peres. She portrayed her strong emotions upon seeing Israel’s close proximity to Syria and watching young Israeli children learn to hide in a fortified playground in Sderot as they live with the ongoing terror of missile attacks. She left Israel with a renewed appreciated for this tiny beleagered country and a fortified resolve to strengthen the U.S./Israel relationship. Following her speech, she opened the floor to questions and answers from her constituents.

The ceiling shimmered with stars, the music played softly in the background and the red carpet was unfurled in all its glory. Margaret Tietz residents were in their element as they readied themselves for an unforgettable evening. Under the direction of the indefatigable Mrs. Louidell Green, President of the Margaret Tietz Resident Council, the Resident Council planned and coordinated an Inaugural Fundraiser Gala for its Residents.
Many participants were outfitted with scarves, tiaras and jewelry generously donated by “Oh So Dressy” in Corona. Makeup Artists from the Make Up For Ever Academy in Soho graciously volunteered to make up all the residents and they did a fabulous job turning their excited models into glamour girls.
The evening opened with a song by Tietz Executive Assistant Sabrina Shaw, and many residents modeled their attire on the red carpet runway. Tietz resident Ms. Phyllis Dumas, a renowned pianist who performed at Carnegie Hall and many other distinguished venues, serenaded the crowd with her musical flair while Margo Munk, another resident, accompanied her in song. Tietz Chef Yossi Mizrahi and his staff outdid themselves with their lavish and elegant spread, which was meticulously planned by Mrs. Green in advance. Veronica Kaninska, Tietz Director of Recreation who was also instrumental in the bringing this event to fruition, captivated the crowd with her rich voice. Many residents’ loved ones joined the festivities and Mrs. Green's extensive family helped entertain the large crowd by playing musical instruments and dancing up a storm. Also in attendance were Yoel Lichstein, Tietz Executive Director and many Department Heads who stayed through the evening to enjoy the delightful ambiance. Linda Spiegel, Tietz Director of Public Affairs, emceed the extensive raffle and auction organized by the residents themselves and the funds raised surpassed everyone’s expectations.
"This was a memorable one-of-a-kind event that left everyone on a high," said Linda Spiegel, "Our residents are already gearing up for next year’s event!"
On Thursday, October 3rd, Margaret Tietz feted its wonderful staff with a Western-themed Barbecue complete with wagons wheels, cowboys hats and karaoke. The folksy party ran through out the afternoon and evening so that all the shifts were able to attend, and serving up the delicious fare were our department heads – eager to show their employees how much they value their hard work!
Linda Spiegel, Director of Public Affairs at Margaret Tietz, was one of the many community leaders and Rabbis invited to attend a recent Jewish Advisory Council meeting on Oct. 8 at the Queens’ District Attorney office to discuss “Elder Abuse in the Jewish Community”. Speakers from various social services organizations such as Ohel and JASA, addressed different angles of this issue and provided crucial resources and information as to what to do if someone is aware of an abusive situation.
